A) PENANG HAWKER FOOD

1. Keat Seng Restaurant (吉成餐室) | Jalan Air Putih.

to savour Penang street food, drop by this place in de evening because you'll find many hawker stalls along de road next to Keat Seng Restaurant. parking can be quite a problem but we managed to park at a further place and walk down to this popular street food area needed exercise!.

#1. Fish Bihun Soup ---recommended
de soup comes in a clear broth and this is different from de milky or sourish type we have it here. overall, it is tasty and flavourful and I would definitely recommend.

from upper left and clockwise:
#2. Char Kuey Teow ---recommended
#3. Pork Satay
#4. Fried Oyster Omelette (Ojien) ---recommended
#5. Fried Chicken
seriously, I think it's hard to go wrong with CKT from any random stall in Penang. fried oyster omelette has de gooey consistency, and dipping into de sour and spicy chilli sauce was simply divine.

2. Air Itam Laksa | Jalan Pasar, Georgetown.

Laksa   RM5 ---recommended
price is gradually increasing if you compared with good old days (RM3). googled some images and found out it was once RM2.5 per bowl. anyway, to begin, give it a quick mix to flavour de rice noodles. generally over de years it was still good.

3. Sister's Curry Mee (暹罗姐妹咖喱面) | Jalan Air Itam, Pekan Ayer Itam.

operate by 2 sisters who are at our grandparents' age, I guess they are de oldest cook I have ever seen. queue, order and de curry noodles will be handed to you from these elderly Lim sisters (self-service).

Curry mee w/o pig's blood cube.
it has a bursting flavour of curry and prawn shells.

this is a typical bowl of curry mee with all ingredients (your choice of noodles) ---recommended
selling small bowl for RM4 and big bowl for RM5. de curry broth is cooked over a charcoal stove and I guess this is de tradition way that makes food addictive and delicious. you can choose to add-on cuttlefish with additional charges.

4. Penang Char Koey Teow.
i) Ah Leng Char Koey Teow | Lorong Zoo, Air Itam. (evening only)

CKT special   RM12.5 ---recommended
CKT special includes extra prawn and mantis prawn. if you're no fans for mantis prawn you can opt for a normal plate for just RM7.5.

ii) Joo Hooi Cafe (愉園茶室) | Jalan Penang, Georgetown.

CKT   RM6 ---recommended
without further ado, lets eat! in Penang, I've noticed a regular CKT comes with 2 prawns by default.

Penang Road Famous Teochew Chendul (beside Joon Hooi Cafe) ---recommended
expected queue even on a weekday (but not as bad as weekends). a great way to cool down in de hot weather.

5. OO White Coffee Cafe | Lebuh Carnarvon, Georgetown.

Crispy Fried Oyster (previously from Lam Ah Coffeeshop).
we have been searching all over de place for this ojien because it has shifted to another place. it took a while but thank god we eventually found it. a bit of de introductory for this fried oyster is that it is crispy at de edge compared to de starchy fried style, hence it stands out. expected smaller oysters just like before but de amount given was still generous.

White coffee.
they are really proud with their coffee as we noticed posters around de shop have been boasting about how good it was. but I think it is pretty average

B) PENANG CAFES

1. The Memory Lane Mufe | Jalan Servis, Pulau Tikus, Georgetown.

Penang themed cafes have been springing up like mushrooms after rain in these recent years. owing to time restriction, we have to select only a few cafes to visit. when I first read about this "mufe" I was a bit puzzled until I came to realise it is a combination word for "museum" and "cafe". serving very classical breakfast, this place brings back memories of de past. they accept payment via 555 booklet which is actually a modified 555 booklet voucher they sold to customers. talk about reminiscing de good old days.

#1. Nasi lemak   RM11 ---recommended
it doesn't taste very spicy so I think de nasi lemak is suitable for everyone. fish has bones so kids and elderly need to be careful. I still prefer rendang or fried chicken.

#2. Set B : Kopi 'O' + roti baker with kaya & butter + half boiled egg   RM9
#3. Fried bihun   RM3 ---recommended
fried bihun (vermicelli) has a very "canteen feel", not to say extremely tasty but I like it because it brings me back to my childhood memory hey my school canteen is worst.

de mufe is trying to mimic de setup of those olden days.

2. Constant Gardener Coffee | Lebuh Light, Chinese Chambers Of Commerce Building, Georgetown.

you should not miss this place if you're a green finger who likes caffeine. expand your green collection by getting some pots home after enjoying your coffee or tea.

Camomile tea   RM8.90
for de city that loves great coffee, but for those who are not coffee lovers their tea selections are equally good too.

Single origin chocolate   RM12.80 ---recommended
trust me, this hot chocolate is exceptionally good.

3. Bean Sprout Cafe | Jalan Masjid Kapitan Keling, Georgetown.

bean sprout cafe was one of de cafes which I've given priority because of its industrial interior and de "brick accent wall". looking at de interior it gives a feeling as though you're dining in a prison.

temperature could peak in de afternoon since and because de upper floor is not air-conditioned so ground floor might be a better option.

Avocado Toast 3 Ways   RM18.50
from de menu description I was expecting avocado toast with smoked salmon and red onions, avocado toast with bacon and eggs, and avocado toast with guacamole. it turned out that these toasts didn't live up to de menu's description. plating was beautifully done if you don't really bother de food description, mediocre but acceptable.

I bet de barista was on leave today because it ended with a bad flat white. steamed milk was a total failure. #cranky

4. Wheeler's Coffee| Lorong Love, Georgetown.

Wheeler's coffee is an interesting bicycle themed cafe which didn't really require me to elaborate much because de pictures say it all or maybe I have nothing else to say.

picture on right:
Wheeler's Chocolate Lava Cake   RM16.9
chocolate lava cake was pretty forgettable because I think de taste depends utterly on de chocolate itself and chocolate sauce. de sour taste of green apple slices and strawberries tend to overpower. kinda petty with de strawberry omg how small can you cut. basic coffee nonetheless but still better if compared to bean sprout cafe when all you need is just a instagrammable proper artisan coffee?

I still heart de street food of Penang (and cafe requires carefully sourced information), what about you?
